He Was Pulled Over and Arrested... For Not Returning a VHS Rental in 2002?
It really happened to a man in North Carolina, who was handcuffed and booked for failing to return the Tom Green comedy "Freddie Got Fingered." Here's the unbelievable story!
James Meyers Jr., was driving his 10-year-old daughter to school when police pulled him over for a broken brake light. When the policeman ran his driver’s license, he saw there was a longstanding warrant out for his arrest. “Sir, I don’t know how to tell you this,” the officer began. Meyers had a 2002 warrant out for his arrest for failing to return a VHS movie rental of “Freddy Got Fingered”!
2. Getting Arrested ... Over That Movie?
Of all the films to be handcuffed over! “Freddy Got Fingered,” starring gross-out comedian Tom Green at the height of his fame (he was married to Drew Barrymore at the time), was trashed by critics. Some called it among the worst movies ever made. It was a box-office flop and has an 11 percent aggregate rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
3. Don't Cops Have Anything Better to Do?
"Because I had my daughter in the car and we were on the way to school they said that I could take my daughter to school and go to work and then find a babysitter, and then come into the police and turn myself in,” Meyers told reporters. He did so, and was promptly handcuffed and jailed on a charge of "failure to return hired property.” He was released on a written promise and will appear in court at a later date. Naturally, Meyers is still pretty incredulous about it. He doesn’t remember what happened to the the VHS tape. As he says on his video he posted to YouTube (above), “They’re not focusing on the crimes I think they should be focusing on. That hour the cops sat out there with me, the hour and a half I was down in the magistrate's office could have been spent somewhere else.”
4. A Happy Ending?
Meyers rewatched “Freddy Got Fingered” the day after he got out of jail, to remind himself of the film. That night, at 1:30 a.m., his phone rang. On the other end was a voice re-enacting one of the most famous scenes from the movie, when Freddy ties sausages to his fingers and chants, “Daddy, would you like some sausage.”
“I instantly knew who it was,“ Meyers said. “I almost died.”
Yup, it was Tom Green, calling from Australia, where he was on a comedy tour. Green told Meyers he would help with any legal fees related to the case. what a guy!
And by the way, the video store that lodged the complaint? Well, J&J’s Video closed for good 10 years ago.
